Health system continues planning for new hospital and medical clinic
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - On March 23, 2011, members of the Sioux Center Community Hospital & Health Center Avera will gather with lead architects and designers to kick off Phase II of planning for a new hospital and medical clinic facility in Sioux Center.
"We have spent the past year assessing the healthcare needs of our communities and developing a plan of action," said Kayleen Lee, the health system's Chief Executive Officer "Phase I was a tremendous success, and now our goal is to design a medical campus that provides a cost-effective, safe, and healing environment for patients and their families."
Cannon Moss Brygger Architects (CMBA) of Sioux City has been named the Architect of Record and will manage the overall design process. HGA Architects and Engineers of Minneapolis will be the Design Architect and assist CMBA in the design of the facility.
The health system has created a set of guiding principles that will help guide the architects during the design process. The design of the new facility will be built upon the historical and cultural values of the community and the mission of the health system.
"Our guiding principles provide a clear and concise set of objectives we want to accomplish with the new facility. Each guideline is necessary for our health system to perform at the highest level" said Lee. "Sometimes this is difficult, but it is very important for our designers to understand."
A major focus on the design of the facility will be placed around the delivery of patient- and family-centered care. Providing a safe, private and comfortable healing environment will enhance the outcomes of patients and reduce stress among patients and clinicians.
Another area of emphasis will focus on the physical spacing of the proposed facility. Since the current hospital was built in 1951 primarily as an inpatient facility, there is a growing need to expand the outpatient services area. This expansion will allow for more specialty services for residents and help recruit/retain the best doctors in the area.
The seven-member Building Committee, co-chaired by Dale Vander Berg and Larry Den Herder, has also been active in hiring several key consultants for the project. Bob Walker, of Walker & Associates, was selected as the Project Manager to oversee and advise the health system throughout the entire project. Mr. Walker is the owner's representative for the health system and will be instrumental in many of the contract negotiations, coordination and execution of the project.
Gorman Resources, based in Minneapolis, has been hired to work with employees to analyze spatial requirements in order to maximize space and productivity of their departments. Many employees have also been involved in field trips to other healthcare facilities in the Midwest to observe new trends in the delivery of healthcare.
"As you can see, we have a talented team of project managers, architects, programmers, medical planners and community leaders in place to build the new medical campus" said Lee. "The economic impact will be tremendous, and most importantly, we will improve the quality of life for our communities."
Sioux Center Community Hospital & Health Center Avera is a non-profit, community hospital which was established in 1946 by a group of local leaders who envisioned a health ministry to serve the health needs of the community. It is governed by forty-five community members who volunteer to serve on the Board of Directors.
