Common lab tests performed at Avera De Smet Memorial Hospital include the following:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) - testing is used to detect infections, viruses and anemia.
- Lipid Panel - includes a series of three tests:
- Cholesterol - testing is different from most tests in that it is not used to diagnose or monitor a disease but is used to estimate risk of developing a disease – specifically heart disease.
- Triglycerides - blood tests are usually part of a lipid profile used to identify the risk of developing heart disease.
- HDL - cholesterol testing is used to determine your risk of heart disease.
- Glucose - testing is most commonly used to diagnose and manage diabetes.
- Urinalysis - testing is performed on a fresh urine specimen and is checked for pH, protein, glucose, bilirubin, presence of white blood cells or red blood cells.
- Chemistry or metabolic panels - testing is used to evaluate kidney function, liver function and electrolyte imbalances.
- Protime - a blood clotting test used for monitoring patients who are taking cumadin or other blood thinner medication.
To help you better understand the many clinical lab tests that are part of routine care as well as diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions and diseases, the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) has developed a Web site, www.labtestsonline.org, to educate the public.
