PERSISTENCE IN PRAYER

Sunday, October 20, 2013

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“…pray always without becoming weary.” (Luke18:1)

Jesus used parables to teach the disciples about God. St. Luke tells us the parable of the persistent widow. She pestered a judge to make a just decision in her favor and although he was not an honest man, he finally did so because of her persistence.

Is God saying to us sometimes, "Are you never satisfied? Is that why, when I answer your prayer requests and give you what you want, you are happy. If I delay or don't give you what you want, you lose faith in me and go away from me." Jesus tells the disciples that if the judge did this for the widow, how much more God will do for those he loves who call to him day and night.

God wants us to be happy. When we make mistakes and fail to follow what we know is right, God will comfort us and give us peace when we are truly sorry and persist in asking forgiveness.  Friends and family may let us down, misfortune can befall us, loss of health and riches can happen, through it all we need not lose faith in our God. God is ever faithful to us.

Forgiving God,

help us never to lose faith in You.

Whatever comes our way remind us of Your love for us

and that You do answer all our prayers and requests.

Help us be like the persistent widow. Amen.
