How Many Towns?

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Thursday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time

“Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.’” (Luke 10:8-9)

I have been welcomed by at least eleven different towns that I entered in Minnesota, South Dakota, West Virginia and North Dakota during my fifty years of Apostolic Life. Accepting what was set before me, I attempted to share the Good News of the Reign of God by teaching in grades schools and parishes, helping those with needs and ministering to the sick through pastoral care.

Think of all the towns that have welcomed Avera facilities involved in curing the sick. I am remembering the anniversary of Mother John Hughes, Sisters Aloysius Chriswell and Joseph Butler arriving in Aberdeen, Dakota Territory on Oct. 4, 1886. They started a school and after the turn of the century health care services.

Have you ever moved from town to town in order to minister where needed?   My gratitude goes out to each of you who as disciples of Jesus have often changed your location, your position, your plans or your heart in order to share your love and the love of God with our brothers and sisters in Jesus.

Loving God, Holy Mystery,

in the words of Augustine of Hippo,

“Let us come to (You) not with our feet but with our affections:

Let us come not by moving from one place to another

but by loving.

When (we are) transported by the heart,

we change affection by movement of the heart.”
