I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left.” They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.” LUKE 17:34-37
What does Jesus mean when He says "one will be taken the other left?" When I read this I had an image of a large hand coming down and snatching people up and placing them in some unknown place and others left behind. Not a very comforting thought if I just stop there.
So what's the point of this analogy? In reflecting on this with some of my favorite commentaries I see this passage is linked closely and intimately with the living presence of God for us today. This is the place where I am called to stay tuned in to get the "rest of the story." I am learning that with scripture passages that seem harsh I need to stay tuned until God shows the whole picture. This applies to me as I can get stuck with the negative and run away and find a distraction … so I need to wait until I experience the other side and touch into the mercy, forgiveness and love of God.
The big hand changes to a gentle touch of God's love, so nothing to fear. This creates balance in my life and allows me to move to the place where God wants to gift me with what I need for my life and ministry.
