There for the Asking

Tuesday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time

“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.” (Luke 19:10)

There are people who seem to possess everything this world values. Others see them as successful. Some may even let jealousy enter their thoughts: Why do they have more than I do? Did they do something above and beyond to achieve this?

Zacchaeus was one of those people who had it all! Many in Jericho would have gladly traded places with him. He was a rich man! He seemed to have everything.

Zacchaeus, however, knew the truth. He was missing something in his life. He may not have fully understood all that was happening in his heart and life, but he had a desperate need to get to Jesus. He had to overcome some obstacles to accomplish that. He was a little man, unable to see over the crowd by which he knew Jesus would be passing. He could have given up and told himself the crowd was too great. He could have allowed the crowd to stand in his way. We could do the same thing many times in our lives, and maybe we have!

What did he do? He found a tree and climbed up hoping only to get a glimpse of the Lord.  As it turned out Jesus was also seeking souls to save. He spotted that little man in the tree and invited him to join Him. He came to Zacchaeus because Zacchaeusd first sought Him!

We have been promised the same miracle! Jesus is seeking sinners to save through His grace. The only thing standing between us and Jesus is our own sin and unwillingness to seek Him, to confess our sins and to ask for forgiveness!  That's it!  Nothing else is required. Sounds simple doesn't it! What's holding us back?

Lord,

increase our confidence that You really do love us so much

that Your forgiveness is there for the asking

if we only come to You and confess our sins no matter what they are.

Amen.
