Wednesday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

“Sun and moon, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.” (Daniel 3:62).

There are so many gifts and blessings for which each of us can praise God and be thankful for this Thanksgiving. For the past 28 years this story has helped center me during this holiday when maybe I haven't felt as thankful as I know I should.

My friend and I shared the same daycare on occasion. We both had little boys, mine still an infant and hers a toddler. Since we worked in health care of course we saw each other on holidays and pretty much any day of the year. I remember talking to her on Thanksgiving and hearing her say there wasn't a whole lot to be thankful for that year. The early 80s weren't that wonderful for farmers in the Midwest.

It was only a couple of days later when her precious toddler was found unresponsive at our daycare and passed away within a day. Memories of that time flood back to me each and every single time I think there might not be a lot for which to be thankful. Those memories teach me that no matter how bad things seem, they can always become worse, and there is always, always something for which to be thankful.

Today I thank God for all of you reading this and your families.

Blessed Father,

As we come together with our families in the next days

to give thanks for the blessings You have given to us,

please be with those whose hearts are heavy, whose prayers are searching for answers.

You are the Great Provider and the Great Comforter to Your servants on earth.

Thank You, thank You, thank You!
