Wednesday of the Thirty-First Week in Ordinary Time

“Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’” (Luke 14:28-30 )

In this passage Jesus clarifies to the crowd that to become followers they must give themselves completely to the work of building the kingdom of God and to do so requires giving up self-interests.  One of Jesus' examples is the building of a tower and the need to have thought through all aspects of the construction before starting such a project. If one can only build the foundation and nothing else, what has been accomplished if the goal was to build a tower?

All of this makes me think about the level of planning and commitment that is needed to fulfill the mission of Avera. As employees we need to reflect on our decision to be a part of the mission and be clear what our role is so that we can contribute in a way that moves us past our self-interests to the greater calling to be a healing ministry of Jesus.

we know the commitment You ask of us to be Your followers.

Our human frailty can cause us to stumble in being true to You.

Forgive us during those times and watch over us as we regain our footing to stay on the right course. Amen.
