Joseph’s Example

Sunday, December 22, 2013

Fourth Sunday of Advent

“When Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew. 1:18)

According to Matthew's Gospel Jesus came into the world amid disgrace, confusion and hurt. Mary conceived a child to the bewilderment and doubt of  Joseph to whom she was engaged. In spite of his confusion and hurt, Joseph was filled with compassion for Mary and so decided to divorce her quietly and thus spare her shame and the punishment of the law. Through the loving compassion of Joseph, God's will was carried out and Jesus was born.

Our world today longs to see the presence of God active and loving amidst the chaos of our time. How is God desiring to come to our broken world through your loving compassion this day?

Like Joseph, are you willing to move beyond your doubt, fear, hurt and anger to be a channel of God's compassionate love for someone in need?

O Lord, giver of all life and goodness,

fill our hearts with love and compassion,

that we too may be life-givers for others, especially for those in need.

We ask this through Your Son, Jesus Christ,

and in union with His Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen.
