At the Feet of Jesus

Wednesday, December 4, 2013

Wednesday of the First Week of Advent

“Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them.” (MATTHEW 15:30)

This is the ministry we are called to in health care: to care for the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute and many others. The vulnerable, the hurting, the meek, the poor in spirit all present to us at Avera for healing, comfort, acceptance and understanding knowing we will always provide them with compassionate and hospitable care in the manner of Christ. It is truly inspiring to be a part of 14,000 employees across Avera who desire to be the hands and feet of Christ to our patients and residents.

When the roles are reversed, and we become the lame, the blind or the deformed, we become aware of what it means to be placed at the feet of Jesus seeking healing. We become for each other the patient and the care giver, the seeker and the found, the healer and the repentant. It is within these symbiotic relationships that we know Christ's healing presence working in our lives and through our lives.

In these moments we are invited to be more, to fully live into our vocational call to care for each through our ministry of health care. For me, the challenge is to be open to receive the invitation and to be willing to place myself at the feet of Jesus seeking healing. It is the challenge to accept Jesus' feet for me today may be my coworker, my friend and the stranger I meet in the hall.

God, open my eyes

so I may truly see Your presence in all whom I encounter.

Open my heart to receive Your healing touch.

Open my mind to know Your invitation to sit at Your feet daily. Amen.
