God is the Boss

Monday, March 10, 2014

Monday of the First Week of Lent

“Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The decree of the Lord is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart. The command of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eye.” (Psalm 19: 8-9)

I heard squeals of laughter as I watched a wiggling mass of arms and legs rolling on the floor in front of me. They seemed entirely worry-free as the four of them wrestled while in my care. I was not as relaxed. “Careful of the TV,” I said as I heard one of them say ouch. “Ok boys, that is enough. Settle down, someone is going to get hurt.” I thought that was a logical statement and the correct response from a worrying grandmother. My three-year-old grandson did not agree. He is starting to develop his independence and is more challenging to authority than he has been in the past. “You are not the boss,” he boldly told me. I thought I would try a different approach to his challenge so asked him who the boss was. With a strong sense of confidence he said, “God is the Boss.” Curious to what he would say next, I asked him who the boss was after God. With just as much conviction he told me “Jesus is.”

As we age and get caught up in the hurriedness of life, it is easy to lose the simple faith we had as children. As I watch my grandchildren grow, I am continually reminded of their unquestioning faith. We can all rejoice in this same faith that God is there for us, watching over us wherever we are. We can have confidence in this because He IS the Boss.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the endless love You are waiting to share

with each and every one of us.

As Your children, lead us to that simple, unquestioning faith

that You are always there for us.

Help us remember to turn to You with all of life’s concerns,

until we meet You in our heavenly home.

In Jesus’ Name we pray,

Amen
