“I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord.” (PSALM 27:13-14)
The Feast of the Annunciation is one of my favorite Marian Feast days with its message of joyful expectation of Jesus’ birth nine months later!
Today is that day! However, because this is Holy Week, the Church postpones this joyful feast day. There is something within me that wishes we could be celebrating the announcement of Jesus’ birth rather than commemorating the impending doom of Jesus’ death! As I ponder the meaning of Holy Week, I’m made aware of the fact that the Annunciation par excellence culminates this week with Jesus’ death and resurrection. I think it is human nature to want to avoid pain, skirt sacrifice and want rather to bask in joy and comfort. A pregnant woman knows well the pain that precedes the birth and then the joy of the new born child.
So, we wait as a pregnant woman waits in joyful hope for the new life that emerges with the acceptance of the daily crosses that come our way.
