Springtime of the Heart

Sunday, March 9, 2014

First Sunday of Lent

“Have mercy on me, O God in your goodness … wipe out my offense. A clean heart create in me and a steadfast spirit renew within me.” (Excerpts from Psalm 51)

What a great scripture verse: Ask and it shall be given to you! One might read this and believe that being a Christian means that everything you want of this earthly life is at your beckon. Or, maybe more appropriate, it might mean, for example, that if we ask for something such as patience, we will get more situations that will give us a chance to build patience. God, I have found, not only has a sense of humor but also wisdom about what we really need.

In all cases, with the perspective of time and distance we can see that what occurs is the alignment of God’s call for us. One commentator suggests that when we seek, when we knock with the earnest desperation of our hearts, we have a promise from God that the door will always be opened.

I feel that inherit in this verse is the understanding that we must have and foster a personal relationship with God. This requires growth in our faith through prayer, presence and seeking. Like a muscle, our faith must be “worked†for us to continue to grow.

The busyness of this life can make it very difficult to have time to seek anything with real depth.  At Avera, our day has many opportunities whether it’s morning prayer, a scripture shared at a meeting or our Avera Daily Line-Up. All of these things allow for seeking. It shouldn’t stop there. Each of us should move below the surface. I encourage all of us, to commit to making the time to seek, and then we shall truly find the life that God wishes for us.

Good and merciful God,

soften the hardness of our hearts

and grant us spirits fashioned after Your Son, Jesus.

We pray this in Your Name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
