Imitating the One

Thursday, April 10, 2014

Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent

“Look to the Lord in His strength; seek to serve Him constantly.” (Psalm 105:4)

Great love is manifested in the cost and sacrifice of the giver. God proved His love for us by giving us the best He had to offer — His only begotten Son who freely offered up his life for our sake as the atoning sacrifice for our sin and the sin of the world. Abraham’s willing sacrifice of his only son, Isaac, foreshadows the perfect offering and sacrifice of God’s beloved Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. This passage in the Gospel of John tells us of the great breadth and width of God’s love. It is a redemptive love that embraces the whole world.

How do I show the sort of great love that is mentioned in today’s Gospel? What am I willing to sacrifice? Do I seek to serve Him throughout my day? Perhaps it is even in the small things … like the gift of time to one another. I was at the Avera McKennan gift shop and had the fortune of meeting another woman. I don’t know why God brought us together for even a brief moment, but knowing our mission of caring, I felt called to stop and listen. She told me she had just lost her fiancé that morning and shared her story. She shared with me that she didn’t have any more tears, but how grateful she was that I took the time to listen to her story. I told her I would continue to pray for her and that we pray for all our patients every day. Her smile was something I will always treasure.

Working to serve God constantly is what makes us unique as we strive to make a difference in the lives of our patients. We all have opportunities if we reach out in faith. We have moments throughout our days to manifest love in our lives.

Lord,

You have shown us the power and healing touch of Your love.

Be with us in word and action as we reach out to others with kindness and support.

Help us to overcome our hesitation as we imitate You. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
