“Beloved, clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for God opposes the proud but bestows favor on the humble. So, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:5-7)
When a family member recently was diagnosed with a chronic illness, my initial reaction was one of shock, despair and, “This can’t happen in my family.” It is safe to say I was humbled as I accepted the news and rediscovered my relationship with God.
When life is sailing along and the stars are all aligning in our lives, it is easy to place our faith at the back of our mind. Then when life throws a curve ball, suddenly God moves first and foremost in our lives. Don’t get me wrong, I regularly attend church, read the daily reflection and thank God for all the good things in my life. But it was easy to allow myself to become mechanical about my faith. Recently I was boldly reminded how much I need God both in good times and when things happen that are out of my control. The best part is knowing that God was there all along patiently waiting.
