Fifth Sunday of Easter

“As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13: 34-34)

The other morning on my way into work, I tuned into “On Being,” the NPR Sunday morning talk show. Krista Tippett, host, was interviewing Fr. Greg Boyle from a prerecorded show first published on July 11, 2012. (You can search for, find and view this interview on YouTube.)

Fr. Boyle is a Jesuit priest and founder of the gang intervention program, “Homeboy Industries.” He has for two decades worked in the most gang-ridden are of Los Angeles. Asked about what his inspiration is, his secret approach, he simply says it all begins with our fundamental obligation to delight in each other. No high-level research; no PhD in reclaiming youth; and no carefully tested program for replication. Just come from delight! To paraphrase Jesus from today’s Gospel, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you delight in one another.”

God, who is Love,

thank You for delighting in us. Amen.
