“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give the glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!” (Psalm 115:1)
Last month a former classmate of mine came to visit in my office at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. We reminisced at beginning our careers in the very spot were my office exists on the 4th floor of the 1919 building — only back then some 35 years ago the space was a patient ward. The room held eight beds, and there was very little privacy for patients and their families.
How health care has changed! Advances in diagnostic medicine, therapies and technologies bring possibilities to our healing mission that did not exist when my career began. Who would have guessed the genome would be mapped, telemedicine would enable physicians to be present in a room hundreds of miles away and robots would transport medications.
Today’s Psalm reminds us that the credit for these modern-day miracles belongs to God and God alone. God’s steadfast love and faithfulness create the bright minds that bring forth scientific accomplishments; powers our ability to diagnose and cure diseases that once shortened lives; inspires the innovation that results in effective technology to assist in our healing mission; and watches over us as we connect with patients and families to provide a personal and compassionate touch in their most anxious moments.
