Feast of Saints Philip and James, Apostles

“… the Father who dwells in me is doing his works.” (John 14:10b)

I am captivated by the amazing relationship of God with, well, Himself in the three aspects through which we know Him:  Father, Son and Spirit. God lives in a perfect love relationship and is always working in harmony to achieve the highest purpose. Jesus mentions that highest purpose: that we might come to the Father, by the Way (which is Christ), knowing Truth (which is Christ) and discovering Life (which is Christ)! We have been invited to join this perfect union of furious love while we are still living in the world! This is really great news!

Our image of God colors our image of ourselves and of others. How do we see God? Does God look like Jesus? Can we believe for even a moment that all that Jesus did was in perfect harmony with the Father and that Jesus is a complete picture of God? Jesus did His works as a man having submitted totally to the Father’s word and works. How can Jesus promise that we who believe in Him will do greater works than he? What? Me? Really? Greater works than Jesus? YES.

As we are the hands and feet of Christ in the world, let us remember that especially in our work (jobs) we are fulfilling the mission of Christ. We can do great things but only as we understand what Jesus knew. I cannot do anything in my own flesh. Christ surrendered Himself entirely to the Father, being fully in God and utterly consumed by God.

Father, Son, Spirit:

perfect love three in one,

We come to You through the only Way, seeking truth and finding life.

You promised to do what we ask in Jesus’ Name.

I ask only for Your highest purpose:

the greater hope of knowing You.

Let me live as He lived, fully consumed by You.

Do your transforming Work in me so that You might complete your Work through me.

Amen.
