To the God who Handles All Things With Us

Wednesday of the Sixth Week of Easter

“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.” (John 16:12)

This statement was made by Jesus as part of His farewell to the disciples on the night prior to being arrested. The disciples knew it was the last time Jesus would talk to them, and they were afraid and uncertain. Jesus wanted the disciples to know He would continue to communicate with them through the Holy Spirit and they needed to trust in Him.

While growing up I was reminded frequently that I wouldn’t be given more than I could handle. In the last several months, this has taken on new meaning as my siblings and I have been dealing with the health and safety of our mother. The physical move from her home to a retirement community has been a blessing, and I know she is being well cared for and is safe. Yet, the emotional roller coaster of taking her from her home, seeing her memory decline, and dealing with her ups and downs is a daily reminder to trust in Him. Like the disciples, I am afraid and uncertain and must rely on my faith that I will be able to handle that which is given to me.

O Lord, Master of knowing,

help us to trust You will only give to us what we can bear,

so that we may remain faithful and hear Your truth.

In Your loving name. Amen.
