“Thus the Lord saved Israel on that day from the power of the Egyptians.” (Exodus 14:30)
When I hear this reading from Exodus I have two memories. The first is listening to this reading at the every Easter Vigil. As we gather at the Vigil, the readings review the history of salvation for us. We are reminded that God has the power to save us: sometimes from our enemies, sometimes from diseases, and sometimes from our own worst impulses.
The second memory I recall is from the movie “The Ten Commandments,” and I can never forget the dramatic parting of the Red Sea. Amid all this drama is the reminder that God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. That was their salvation. So what are some of the things we might need to be freed of today? Where do we need God’s help in “parting the water” and helping us with a difficult passage?
