Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

“In those days, God delivered all these commandments …” (Exodus 20: 1-17)

Rules and policies!! Rules and policies!! Why can’t we just go about our business without them?! Have you ever uttered these words or listened to a coworker’s frustrations about how “it has to be done?”

Well, guess what … even God has rules!

When I was assigned this reading, I struggled about what to write and asked myself, “So which of these commandments am I going to write about?”   Then a friend said “rules and policies,” and it all came together.

I know what God’s rules are. We memorize them as children, and at the time they are very ominous sounding. But as we grow both physically and spiritually, they begin to take on the correct meaning. They also are at the core of our faith, helping to shape and guide us.

Of all the rules, be they from JACHO, the Department of Health, Avera or God, it will be God’s rules I will do my best to follow for they flow from love, and by abiding in them, I follow God’s way of love. It is for His everlasting life that I strive every day … that I pray for every day. Through His rules, it will be granted.

Dear Lord,

help me to follow Your rules.

“I, the Lord, am your God.”

You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain,

Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day,

Honor your father and your mother,

You shall not kill,

You shall not commit adultery,

You shall not steal,

You shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor,

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house,

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife,

Through these, grant me eternal life with You.

Amen.
