“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. or His mercy endures forever. Who can tell the mighty deeds of the Lord. Or proclaim all His praises?” (Psalm 106: 1B-2)
Every night, we sit down as a family to say prayers before bedtime. As part of our night time ritual, my husband and I began a practice of asking each of our children (ages 5, 3 and 1) to name one thing they are thankful for. We began this tradition as a way to take a moment to recognize all of the gifts God has given to us.
When we first started naming our blessings each night, our children didn’t quite understand the concept. Most nights, they would simply repeat what my husband or I named. After we had been at it a while, however, our children’s responses got quite a bit more creative! Now, we hear everything from “my toys,” to “the world,” to “the trees,” to “Spiderman,” to “hot dogs”. Hearing my children name all of these blessings reminds me that, no matter what stressors or challenges we might face in our daily lives, God has blessed us with so much.
