Several years ago while on a vacation to the Black Hills our family toured Wind Cave. Our tour guide explained the uniqueness of the cave as he led us though the complex labyrinth of passages. We learned that the cave is named for barometric winds at its entrance and is one of the longest caves in the world. Some of the passages were narrow allowing only one person through at a time. We followed our guide deeper and deeper into the cave admiring the unique formations of box work until we came to a “room” somewhere beneath the South Dakota prairie. Then our guide announced he would turn off the lights and we should prepare ourselves for total darkness.
When the lights were turned off, I experienced the total absence of light for the first time in my life. It is an experience I will never forget. The darkness was so intense that our wise guide did not leave the lights out for very long. I still remember the relief I experienced when the lights came back on.
Sometimes life’s events leave us in the dark. Panic grips us as we struggle not knowing where to turn or what to do. These are the times we need the reminder from Psalm 91. God is a refuge and fortress and answers when we call to Him. He promises to be with us in the middle of our troubles. We can be assured of His faithfulness when we place our trust in Him.
