“Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business.”
In the parable of the King who invited guests to the wedding feast, Jesus tells us that the King’s guests refused to come, even when invited a second time. Wow, it is hard to imagine turning down an invitation to a glorious feast. But it does make me pause to think about the different ways God’s extends “invitations.”
For Mary, the invitation from God resulted in a “Yes.” Mary was asked to be the mother of our Savior Jesus. She is a tremendous example of responding with “Yes.” Thinking about Mary and her faith and openness to God makes me feel that my responses are insignificant.
Yet, when I reflect on this parable, I also think of the daily moments in which I am called by God to do “good.” How do I respond in those everyday opportunities to build up another by my words or actions? Do I take the extra time with a coworker to listen when she is struggling and needs my full attention? What about the person at the checkout stand at the store? Do they need a smile or a word of encouragement? Are there those in my own family who need me to say “Yes” to the invitation to share God’s Love.
The world is very busy with a lot of things demanding attention. I often miss the opportunity, pass on the invitation and go about my activities and work not seeing what I am being called to do. As I reflect on this parable, I pray that I can grow and be better each day at answering the invitation to be a positive light in the world during the everyday moments.
