No Busy Signals

Memorial of Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

“And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly …” (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

Recently I came across a cartoon of a young child handing the cell phone to her grandmother. Grandma replies “Wireless communication is nothing new. I’ve been praying for 75 years.”

I believe this is how God wants us to communicate with Him.

Using my phone (and my phone is always within reach) to send a quick text or call a friend is very easy. It’s as easy as saying a quick prayer to God. When our thoughts turn to worry, fear, discouragement and anger, we are able to consciously and quickly call God and turn every thought into prayer and every prayer into thanksgiving. As we go through the day, prayer is our first response to every situation. Unceasing prayer is, in essence, continual dependence on and communion with our Heavenly Father.

And the best part is, we have unlimited minutes, a free connection and never ever have to worry about a busy signal.

Loving Lord Jesus,

You are near to those who earnestly call upon You.

Give me the grace to pray unceasingly.

In Your Heavenly Name we pray.

Amen.
