The Use of Our Gifts

Saturday, August 31, 2013

Saturday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time

“Jesus told his disciples this parable: ‘A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one– to each according to his ability.’” (MATTHEW 25:14-30 )

Some of my Avera colleagues know that I am a big fan of Marcus Buckingham’s work around personal strengths and weaknesses and how to capitalize on those in the workplace. This is a personal interest of mine and also fits well with the work I do in leadership and staff development. We all have natural gifts (strengths), and I believe the more we tap into those the more Avera gains as we play to our strengths, which is where we excel in performance and find our energy at work.

The parable of the talents in Mark 25 reminds us that we are to use our gifts in the service of God. It’s another opportunity to think about how we use our strengths within Avera to live the mission and within our daily lives as we serve God. Being good stewards of our gifts allows us to be faithful in our service and to be a blessing to others.

Lord,

we know that You have blessed each of us with gifts

that we can use to further the building of Your kingdom.

May we be mindful that we are to use these gifts to their fullest potential as we glorify You.
